Community
Inherent in the Red Beach School vision is the concept of "community". We believe that it is vitally important that we educate our children so that they know how to be respectful, inclusive members of any community in the world. Our heart metaphor symbolizes the values of "Respect, Inclusion, Care and Honesty" which we want all of our children to demonstrate (the words spell the word RICH). Similarly the shells clustered together on the beach symbolize people who can "participate, celebrate and collaborate".
For this reason, our school is organized in to "Communities" of 4-5 classrooms who are at different ages from each other. For example a community could be made up of a year 1, a year 2, a year 4 and a year 6 class. The communities are grouped geographically together around the school and do spend time together participating in activities where the children are practising what it is to be a great community member. This might include doing fun-type activities, preparing for assemblies, sharing each others most recent learning and buddying together so that older students are teaching younger ones. Every year we re-name the communities after what ever the curriculum focus is for the year, e.g. in 2011 they are all named after 7 rugby playing nations, in 2010 they were endangered species.
