SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY

Every year usually in Term 2, the school organizes a cross country running event for all of our students to participate in. The children run in age-groups according to the class level they are in, with the distances increasing with age. The event is usually held at Shakespear Regional Park at the end of the Whangaparaoa peninsula, which is an ideal setting for races that are literally “across the countryside” with suitable numbers of hills and valleys.

All of the school children travel to Shakespear Park by bus (funded usually by the Activity Fee) with many parents arriving by car to cheer their children on. The event has many purposes: firstly it usually culminates in a time at school where the importance of personal physical fitness is being focussed on and the emphasis is therefore on each individual child’s personal fitness. Secondly it provides an excellent opportunity for the children to put in to practise many of the “Lifelong Learning Qualities” that is a cornerstone of the Red Beach School Vision. It is exciting to see all of the children regardless of age, talk about such aspects as their own goal for the day, their ability to persevere and what it means to take that risk. Lastly the event itself is a great “community” day, where the children represent their own community, support all of those in their community and celebrate the successes of all. Similarly with so many parents, grandparents and school supporters attending the day, it is another great opportunity for everyone involved with Red Beach School (students, staff, parents and community members) to enjoy being together.

THE MUSICAL

Once every 3 years, usually at the end of Term 3, Red Beach School produces a musical production. Every child in the school participates in the musicals, regardless of age, as each class or community has a part to play in the overall story. The philosophy behind this is that the school aims to ensure that every child gets to experience the thrill of “being on stage” and being part of a large production at least twice during their primary years.

The musicals usually align to some sort of learning theme that is current within the class programmes. For example in 2010, the musical had an environmental sustainability theme which mirrored aspects that were being talked about during class programmes.

The Musical is usually presented for 4 nights, with each child performing on 2 of the nights. Wherever possible, the staff organize families so that their children are on the same nights. The event is utilized as a fundraiser for the school with tickets to the show being pre-sold. All 4 shows are usually sell-outs! Many parents offer their support and expertise in creating costuming, building props and helping with rehearsals. Although lots of hard work, the musicals are always outstanding on the night and a great opportunity for everyone in the school to participate together.

ART ATTACK

Once every 3 years, usually in Term 3, the school organizes an exhibition and auction of our children’s art works, which we call the Art Attack. In the term prior to this event, all of the children spend time learning about artists and art and enjoy creating their own pieces. From these experiences the children, in consultation with their teachers choose one piece of art to exhibit.

Each child’s work is presented professionally and photographed. The photos form the basis of the catalogue which outlines the art and the purpose behind it. The actual Art Attack is usually held in the school’s Hall over a Friday evening and all day Saturday. Parents and school supporters attend the event whenever they wish during these times, purchase a catalogue, admire all of the art and make a bid (in writing) on anything they would like. Many parents like to bid on their own child’s work. Bids all close at the end of the event on the Saturday with most people either securing their new art then and there or during the next school week.

On the Friday evening, the Community Committee usually also organize a "live" auction of art that has been donated by local artists, school staff and friends of the school.

SCHOOL GALA

Every year around the beginning of November the Community Committee organize a “super gala event”. This is held on a Sunday, starting at 10.00 a.m. finishing usually at around 2 p.m. The day is very well attended by all of the school’s students, staff and parents and a huge crowd of interested supporters. Each year the Community Committee choose a particular fundraising focus for the profits of the Gala. Traditionally they make around $20,000. Although “raising funds” is the major objective of the Gala, it is also an excellent community-focussed day when people gather together as families and supporters of Red Beach School.

SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES

Every second Friday morning at 9.10 a.m. the school organizes full school assemblies in our school hall, which many parents like to attend. The main purpose of these gatherings is to provide an opportunity for our children to celebrate their successes and enjoy presentations by each other. Each school community (group of 3 or 4 classes) take turns to organize and present each assembly, resulting in approximately 3 opportunities each year for each child to be on stage during assembly time. Principals Learning Awards are also presented at these assemblies, with usually 1 or 2 children from each class receiving these each time. The focus of these awards is very much on successes in learning and receiving these are valued highly by all of our students. Similarly successes in sports and other school activities are also celebrated at these times.

SCHOOL SWIMMING

Every year, usually during Term 2, the children who are in Year 2,3 and 4 participate in an intensive learn-to-swim /water safety programme held in one of the 2 pools in the area (either the Northern Arena or the Leisure Centre). The children travel by bus every day for 10 consecutive days and are instructed by qualified swimming instructors employed by the centres. Parents are asked to pay for both the instruction and the cost of transport. Fortunately the school is usually able to get a discounted rate so that these lessons are much cheaper than usual swimming costs. Parents are welcome to come along and watch their child’s lesson.

SWIMMING SPORTS

In Term 1 of each year all of the Y4,5 and 6 children participate in the school’s swimming sports, which is a one-day event where participation and competition are both encouraged. The event is organized as a “community” challenge with points earned for participation in a whole range of events. Parents are welcome to attend this exciting event!

Selected children are chosen at this event to go on to represent the school at the Inter-School Swimming Competition which follows closely in time after our school event.

SCIENCE FAIR

Once every 3 years the school organizes a Science Fair, in the year where there is a particular focus on learning in science in our curriculum. The fair usually involves classes (and in the case of Y5/6 children) setting up displays about whatever learning experiences they have recently had. The displays tend to be interactive and our children are encouraged to explain what they are all about to parents and visitors. The fair usually lasts for 2 days and one evening, so that everyone has an opportunity to visit and share in what the children have been up to.

WALKATHON

Regularly (at least once every 2 years) the school organizes a Walkathon held at Shakespear Regional Park. The children are challenged to walk various lengths during the day, stopping often for rests and food and to enjoy the landscape. Each child is asked to seek sponsorship for this event, with many people donating a sum of money if the child succeeds in walking that distance. Although it is a school fundraiser it is also a fun community time with many parents and caregivers joining in on the day.

SCHOOL ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Every year in Term 1, the school organises an Athletics Carnival for all year 3,4,5,6 students to participate in. The day culminates in a time at school where the children have been doing Physical Education units on Run, Jump, Throw. (Athletic Skills) The day is an opportunity for the children to put the skills they have learnt into practice and earn points for the distance they throw or jump and the speed in which they run. A large focus of the day is on participation and Community spirit. The children move around athletic type activities in Community groups and score points for their Community.

Later in the year a separate ‘trial’ day for Athletics is held for year 5 & 6 pupils to identify the students that will compete at the Interschool Athletics Competition.

The Year 1 and 2 students are also involved in a half day event that allows them to put their Run, Jump, Throw skills into practice in a tabloid style event. Parents are welcome to attend any of the Athletic Events.

EDUCATION OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM

At Red Beach School we encourage as much education outside of the classroom (EOTC) as possible as we see these experiences as being huge opportunities for the children to learn in authentic environments. Trips to view and experience a whole range of learning opportunities (e.g. TiriTiri Island, the Bee Centre, the Recycling Centre, Silverdale Historical Society) are planned and organized regularly. Funds for this are usually included in the Activity Fee that all families are asked to pay at the beginning of the year.

At the Year 5 level all of our children participate in a range of day EOTC experiences which they may not get the opportunity to do with their families e.g. trailbike riding and snorkelling. As part of this programme all of our Y5 students visit a local marae to learn about traditional maori crafts and ways of life.

At the Year 6 level all of our students spend 3 days participating in an EOTC camp, usually at an organized and reputable EOTC centre. In recent years the school has used Camp Adair at Hunua. Parents do pay a separate camp fee for this experience. Approximately 10-15 parent helpers are required every year.
